City Council to vote on damming Santa Clara river, flooding most of Canyon Country

The Santa Clarita City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to proceed with an agenda item to build a dam and reservoir in Canyon Country. The move comes after Danta Acosta was confirmed to the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency board of directors. The city and water agency are working together on the project in an effort to retain more water for use in the area.

According to a staff report, the additional water will result in a net increase in available water for the residents of Santa Clarita, and will make the agency a “buttload” of money when they raise rates later this year. No word on impacted Canyon Country residents, or if they will be compensated for the loss of land and homes. The earth-fill type dam is to be built just east of Sand Canyon Road, and will not affect the golf course.
